Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,

It’s hard to believe that we have yet to use a snow day this winter.  Even more surprising, we are experiencing fifty-degree temperatures in January!  A belated Happy New Year to all of you. Our Schools are operating in full swing following the holiday break.

Teacher and Principal Evaluation

A committee consisting of teachers, administrators, a board member and a community member have been hard at work for the past year creating new teacher and principal evaluation systems.  The teacher system is called the Teacher Evaluation and Professional Growth system (TPEG) and the principal system is called the Leader Evaluation and Professional Growth system (LPEG).  We are piloting both systems this year with any needed changes being incorporated for full implementation in the 2016-17 school year.

Topics teachers will be evaluated on include classroom strategies & behaviors, planning & preparation, reflecting on their teaching, collegiality & professionalism, and student growth and learning.  Principals will be evaluated on the domains of professional growth & learning, student growth & learning, school planning & progress, school culture, instructional leadership, and stakeholder engagement.

RSU1 focuses on continuous improvement of the teaching and learning process so that students will get the best possible education.  Our new evaluation systems are evidence of this focus.

Proficiency Based Education

Proficiency-based education (PBE) refers to any system of instruction, assessment, grading and reporting that is based on students demonstrating mastery of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn before they progress to the next lesson or grade.  The set of knowledge and skills that students must know and be able to do is called the standards.  RSU1 standards are what we consider to be the basic set of knowledge and skills that is expected of all students, even though all students may not be expected to meet them in exactly the same way.

Morse High School teachers have been working together as a staff and in departments for 2-3 years on identifying standards for each content area.  In addition, they are working hard to create assessments that would measure these standards.  Conversations that have occurred among educators about what exemplary education looks like have been nothing short of amazing! A letter with more information about PBE will be sent home to families soon.

Morse Building Project

RSU1 is interested in acquiring land at Wing Farm and land adjacent to Bath Middle School.  Appraisals have been ordered by RSU1 for both properties that should be completed by the end of February.  Once a site is decided upon, a straw poll vote will be held to ask residents if they support the site for the new project.

Educational Specifications were approved by the Board of Directors in December after much input from staff, students, and community members.  “Educational Specifications are the means by which a school administrative unit describes its educational goals and activities, and the interrelationships between these educational goals and activities and their associated spaces that need to be provided in a proposed new or renovated facility.” – Maine State Board of Education

State of the Schools Presentation
